The project was realised through the research and application of new technologies. A slender mast houses the barometric sensor and supports an array of solar cells that generate electricity to power the lighting and pumps, with all the water bring fully recycled within the tower which is a prototype for an environmentally responsive building.
When the weather will be ‘bad’ the water stays at a lower level, but, when the weather is predicted to be ‘fine,’ it is pumped up to a high level and sprayed onto the inner surface of the glass cylinder, running down against the light to create a dynamic sculpture.
“It is one of the most successful pieces of public art in Britain.”
